Dear Professor Newell,

Please ignore the last message! Our MAIL prgram is having a bad day.
Here is the message I intended to send:

As you no doubt know, I instantly accepted CMU's offer of an asst.
professorship. I look forward to future discussions (and perhaps
joint research efforts).

If you intend to read my thesis anyway, would you consent to being a
formal member of my reading committee? Ed informed me that this is
independent of my "orals" committee, so it would not be necessary for
you to be present in Palo Alto for my oral exam. Of course, I'll
tell you when it's scheduled for, in case you can make it.

My wife Merle and I will be back in Pittsburgh in late May or early
June, to try to arrange housing. We look forward to seeing you then.
Incidentally, if you happen to know of a vacant house (e.g., a
professor on sabbatical), we'd be interested.

Regards,
Doug Lenat
